3 SECRET MONEY BELIEFS: What keeps good-hearted Christians from giving financially?

3 Unspoken Beliefs about Money

  1. “Our money belongs to us.”
  2. “There won’t be enough.”
  3. “Giving is optional.”

Let’s take a quick look behind the curtain of these well intended, but defective beliefs that hold so many of us back from God’s blessing and bounty:

1.“Our money belongs to us.”

Actually, it doesn’t. “The earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains, the world, and those who dwell in it.” (Psalm 24:1). Everything we proudly possess, in reality belongs to God. We own nothing. Everything we have is really His. All of it, including our very lives, are on loan to us.

Even our ability to earn a living comes from God. “It is he who gives us the ability to earn wealth.” (Deut 8:18). And why? To fulfill His covenant. To complete His purposes.

FALSE: “Our money belongs to us.”

TRUE: It all belongs to God.”

  1. “There won’t be enough.”

This sincere secret fear worriedly looks ahead to the state economy without also factoring in God’s economy. God’s intention is not to make us financially strapped, but rather to make us financially mature and wise, men and women trained and equipped to handle His wealth. In the Bible, “money” is mentioned over 2,300 times — more than “heaven” and “hell” combined.  The Lord has overloaded scripture with very detailed instruction on how to handle wealth, and has kindly warned us about what specifically shuts down wealth. It turns out that it is more dangerous NOT to give, than to give, for if we withhold what God does not intend to be ours, there will never be enough.

“One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.”  (Proverbs 11:24).

False: “There won’t be enough.”

TRUE: “If we obey God with giving, there WILL be enough.”

  1. “Giving is Optional.”

This frighteningly defective thought puts us at risk. Giving is a requirement, a non-negotiable pre-condition for every one of us who receives God-owned money (see #1), into our households. The moment we understand this hard reality, most of us change our giving habits immediately. Who would want to risk keeping even a few pennies the Lord did not ordain to stay in our hands?

“Whoever shuts their ears to the cry of the poor will also cry out and not be answered.” (Proverbs 21:13)

FALSE: “Giving is Optional.”

TRUE: “Giving is explicitly required – by God.”
